As a part of our ongoing “What’s on Your loom” series, we are featuring the works of textile artist, designer and maker Anna Stuffelbeam. Anna is a student at the Wilson College of Textiles, North Carolina State University. Below, she shares her latest projects:
Works…
Ripples, 2022
12” x 10” Woven cotton, hand dyed with natural indigo.
Inspired by patterns found in the ripples of a clear creek in North Carolina. Through the language of interlacing yarns, this piece aims to convey the experience of human connection with nature, and the meditative essence of a walk along a creek.
Sea, 2022
12” x 10” Woven cotton, hand dyed with natural indigo.
The disarray of threads interwoven, up close appear haphazard, from a distance an image becomes visible and figures emerge. Inspired by time spent in New Zealand and the human connection with nature at the edge of sea and sand, chaos and calm.
- Sea (Framed)
- All three pieces on the loom
Surface, 2022
11” x 11” Woven cotton, hand dyed with natural indigo.
Look into the depths. Hidden patterns in deep indigo, where light and dark create contrasting patterns, unorganized yet forming an image. An invitation to look more closely, linger and observe beyond the surface.
About…
B.S. Textile Design (2023), M.S. Textiles (2024)
Observing and capturing moments through photography, I am fascinated with the transitions where chaos meets calm and patterns emerge. Similar to the process of creating order from a mess of threads, I try to capture a wild nature in the confines of a photograph. Working at the intersection of craft and fine art, I use natural fibers and plant dyeing to weave pieces using both traditional hand weaving techniques and digital tools.
The idea of chaos and pattern is exhibited through woven structures that may look random but also form an image. As a textile artist, designer, maker and plant enthusiast based in North Carolina, I use natural fibers and plant dyes with the aim to bring the essence of human connection with nature into an interior space.
