Presenting Fiona J Sperryn's works titled Scapes...

As a part of the series showcasing the works of Artists working on the TC2 loom, we present the latest creations by Fiona J Sperryn. Fiona’s inspiration comes from the environment, a love of drawing and particularly of weave structure.  The combination of digital innovation with traditional craft skills is important and she enjoys the physical interactions of the creative process, from textural mark-making outdoors to hand finishing the woven cloth in her rural studio in Cornwall. She tells us more about the Scapes series…

Scapes

‘The Cornish landscape always evokes and emotional response in me. The sun dazzling off the water, the splash of the sea, the salty breeze on my face, the call of the gulls. In Scapes, I’m responding to these sensations, escaping into my imagination, conjuring a landscape’.

The Scapes series started with drawing in the sunshine using dirty charcoal from the barbecue. This was followed by clean photography, digital translation and coding. Rough and smooth yarns were chosen for growing the artwork on the loom. Rich smelling indigo dipping and painting completed the creative process.

The large hanging Scape measures 75 x 160cm and is hand woven in tencel, linen, rayon floss and lurex and cotton. The artwork has been created without buying new fibres and yarn sources include post-industrial and project waste.

The small artwork numeric titles (Scape 1495, Scape 1404 etc) are a nod to the digital creative process. Each artwork is framed in white and measures 28 x 28 x 3cm. The frames are made from recycled materials and have a subtle grain effect. Yarns, primarily from post-industrial sources, include tencel, linen, rayon floss, lurex and cotton.

About…

It was during a Masters at the Royal College of Art that Fiona J Sperryn discovered the tool which allowed her to combine her love of drawing and weave. Now, as the proud owner of a TC2 and unusually for an artist in the UK, she is using the jacquard loom for creative expression producing one-off artworks. She also offers a commission weaving service and individual tuition with the TC2 loom. Fiona has lectured in Textile Design at Falmouth University for a number of years and has exhibited in London, Cornwall and Berlin.
