Woven artworks by Joan Truckenbrod

As a part of our What’s on Your Loom series, we feature the works of digital and fiber artist Joan Truckenbrod. Her  artworks include digital and fiber art, video sculpture and coded algorithmic drawings. Her artwork creates an intuitive conduit between technology and nature, simultaneously injecting each into the other. She tells us about her latest works…

The rich tradition of textiles embedded with rituals and ceremonies, inspire my fiber artworks. Light undulates through water, distorting forms and capturing reflective patterns of bubbles emanating in the flow in a stream. These textiles are embedded with particles of light as they propel through linear pathways together with the organic flow of untethered threads.

In 2019, twelve of my TC2 weavings formed a solo exhibit in the Art Gallery at the Benton County Historical Museum. Recently three of these weavings were included in a solo exhibition at the Schneider Art Museum. The textiles I am currently weaving will be included in a group exhibition in December.

The TC2 is a natural complement to my studio practice as I am a digital artist and have created textiles using dye sublimation and other printing processes. Some of these textiles were coded algorithmic patterns in 1979 through 1983.

Concepts, Techniques and Materials

The opportunity to create image, form and structure through thread is an “open artwork” for me. Experiencing these textiles expresses a resonance of the natural flow of water and light. Transitioning from a white warp to a black warp, I have chosen metallic threads to express the reflections of light and how they create form. Differences in light reflectivity and absorption creates a dynamic visual surface. I am also working with silk and stainless steel threads as I plan to create sculpted forms with these woven textiles.
